What is PEFC?
PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification systems) is an international forest certification system that promotes ecologically, socially and economically sustainable forestry all over the world. About ten percent of the world's forests are certified, and there are a total of about 280 million hectares of PEFC-certified forests in the world.
PEFC sets many requirements for forest management, which you can read about in the standards. You can find the Finnish PEFC standards on this page. PEFC promotes ecologically, socially, economically sustainable forestry. With PEFC's Chain of Custody (CoC) origin monitoring system, a company that procures timber, manufactures or markets products ensures the origin of the wood and that wood from certified forests has been used for the product.
In order to obtain the certificate, an independent organization must guarantee that forest management and wood traceability are in accordance with PEFC international standards. Independence means that the control organization is not tied to any party in the production chain or to the certification system or those supporting it. The certification company, assessed by the authorities as independent and sufficiently competent, monitors that standards are followed in the certification. PEFC certification can be identified by the PEFC logo or marking on the product, product packaging or other documentation linked to the product. The company that manufactures the products receives permission to use the PEFC logo and mark when the company's operations are certified.
